Maternity Session FAQ: Everything You’re Wondering

Thinking about booking a maternity session but have a million questions? You’re not alone. Pregnancy is a whirlwind of unknowns, and adding “hire a photographer” to the list can feel overwhelming. Let me answer the questions I hear most often so you can feel confident and excited about capturing this incredible chapter.

When Should I Book My Maternity Session?

I recommend scheduling your session between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump is beautifully round and prominent, but you’re (hopefully) still feeling relatively comfortable and mobile.

That said, every pregnancy is different. If you’re carrying multiples or your doctor has mentioned the possibility of an early delivery, we might schedule a bit earlier. And if you’re past 34 weeks and feeling great? We can absolutely still make magic happen.

When to reach out: As soon as you know you want one! My calendar fills up, especially in the busy fall season. Reaching out in your second trimester gives us the most flexibility.

What Should I Wear?

The goal is to celebrate your bump, so fitted is your friend — bodycon dresses, fitted tops, or even beautiful draped fabrics that accentuate your shape.

Many of my mamas love:

  • A flowy maxi dress — elegant and comfortable
  • A fitted midi dress — shows off the bump beautifully
  • Jeans and a fitted top — casual and timeless
  • Something intimate — a beautiful robe or draped fabric for a more artistic feel

Soft, solid colours photograph best. And don’t forget — partners and older siblings are always welcome to join for part of the session!

Should My Partner and Kids Be Included?

Yes, please! While the focus is on you and your bump, some of my favourite maternity images include partners’ hands on the belly, a toddler kissing mama’s tummy, or the whole family gathered around in anticipation.

We’ll typically spend the first part of the session on just you, then bring in the family. Best of both worlds.

Where Do Maternity Sessions Take Place?

I offer both outdoor and in-home options:

  • Outdoor — golden fields, quiet parks, river valley trails. Nature provides the most stunning backdrops, especially at golden hour.
  • In-home — cosy, intimate, and personal. Your nursery (even if it’s still a work in progress), your bedroom with beautiful window light, your living room where real life happens.

There’s no wrong choice — it’s about what feels like you.

I’m Not Photogenic / I Don’t Love My Pregnant Body

I hear this more than you might think, and I want you to hear this: you are absolutely radiant, and I will show you.

Pregnancy changes your body in profound ways, and it’s normal to have complicated feelings about that. But here’s what I know from years of photographing mamas-to-be: when you see yourself through my lens — glowing, powerful, beautiful — something shifts.

My job is to pose you flatteringly, find your best light, and capture the strength and beauty of what your body is doing. You don’t need to know how to pose or feel confident walking in. That’s my job.

How Long Does a Session Last?

My maternity sessions typically run 45-60 minutes. That’s enough time to get a beautiful variety without exhausting you — because I know growing a human is tiring work!

What If I Go Into Labour Before Our Session?

Life happens! If your little one decides to make an early appearance, we’ll either reschedule (if there’s time) or convert your session into a fresh-48 or newborn session. We’ll figure it out together — no stress.

What’s Included?

Every maternity session with Pearl Photography & Co. includes:

  • A pre-session consultation to plan location, outfits, and vision
  • The session itself (45-60 minutes)
  • A private online gallery of professionally edited images
  • A print release for personal printing

My maternity collections start at $150 — see full details on my maternity page.

One Last Thing

You might be tempted to skip maternity photos. To tell yourself you’ll do it next time, or that you don’t look good enough right now, or that it’s not a big deal.

But this — this — is a big deal. You’re growing a person. That deserves to be remembered.

Ready to celebrate your bump? Book your maternity session — I’d be honoured to capture this chapter for you.
